Best Delicatessen : Shlomo and Vito’s New York Delicatessen

Readers pick.

Premier Restaurant Group thanks Tucson Weekly for voting Shlomo and Vito’s the best Tucson deli.

If the Bubbe is visiting, and you’re thinking, “Great, let’s take her out for good pastrami,” she’ll enjoy, but perhaps she’ll wince when she sees shrimp on that other part of the menu. “What kind of place is this again?” she asks. But then she thinks about her nice Italian friend, and wouldn’t it be nice if she could take her here for lunch sometime? That’s kind of what this place is all about—a bridging of two deli cultures that happens to make a good deli breakfast and a fine pasta dinner, too. Don’t get too caught up in this food paradox. It works; it’s good; and Bubbe’s happy.

Tucson Citizen Review of Championship Dining

This is a winner of a sports bar.

It’s home to most things related to University of Arizona sports, from sports-talk radio shows to fundraisers, alumni gatherings and the like.

Sam Hughes Place Championship Dining has some attractive features, not the least of which is a 70-foot, serpentine, honey onyx bar that’s lit from underneath. The dining room is loaded with rich wood and pleasant and comfortable accents. Were it not for the giant-screen televisions in just about every direction (and even in the restrooms), you could easily lull yourself into thinking you’re in for fine dining.

Then the food arrives, and you remember that you’re in a sports bar, albeit a really nice one.

Sam Hughes offers an ample variety of what it touts as “American Favorites,” ranging from salads to “overstuffed sandwiches” to steaks, seafood and pasta.

Tucson Citizen Review of Shlomo & Vito’s

That a tony shopping center in a tony ZIP code could be home to a New York-style deli like Shlomo & Vito’s is nothing less than bizarre.

Step inside the roomy, black-and-white-tile-floored, sports-barish deli and you’ll quickly shoot a look back out the front windows at the shopping center to make sure you didn’t just fall through a wormhole.

If you’re still feeling off-kilter, open the menu and take a look at how much a sandwich will set you back. Presto, you’re back at Skyline and Campbell.

Thing is, as pricey as Shlomo & Vito’s may seem compared to other delis, you end up getting quite a bit of bang for your quite a bit of buck. The portions on everything from starters to sandwiches to desserts are, as the kids like to say, “ginormous”.
